Cork County Council Approves 24/7 Air Ambulance Base Expansion in Rathcoole
Cork County Council has granted permission for the expansion of an air ambulance base in Rathcoole, enhancing emergency response capabilities. The project includes a new runway, lighting, and operational facilities, enabling 24/7 service for critical air ambulance operations.

Cork County Council approved plans for an upgraded air ambulance base in Rathcoole, which includes a new hard-surfaced runway, taxiway, and ground lighting. The air ambulance service, operated by HSE since 2023, aims to enhance capabilities by allowing landings at night, addressing prior limitations that restricted service availability.
Additionally, a new operations base, helipad, and wastewater treatment system are part of the project. A total of 26 conditions were set, including a cap of 4,499 aircraft movements annually. The expansion is expected to commence soon after an objection was withdrawn, benefitting emergency services across Munster.
