Corpus Christi's Inner Harbor Desal Project Estimated at $978.7 Million
The estimated cost for the Inner Harbor desalination plant in Corpus Christi is now $978.7 million, a reduction from the previous estimate of $1.2 billion. This change follows the termination of the design-build contract with Kiewit Infrastructure South Co. in late 2025, due to rising costs and concerns about long-term financial impacts.
The city has engaged Corpus Christi Desal Partners to develop revised design options. The City Council will discuss this updated proposal in their meeting on February 24, addressing contract negotiations for design and pricing. The desalination project aims to diversify water sources amidst growing demand and prolonged drought cycles, despite concerns over its ecological impact and proximity to a historically Black and Hispanic neighborhood.
