Cortical Labs Launches Biological Data Centre in Singapore Using Brain Cells
Cortical Labs, in collaboration with NUS and DayOne, launched a biological data centre in Singapore on July 16, utilizing living human brain cells for data processing. This innovative facility addresses energy efficiency challenges in traditional data centres, operating at a power consumption of only 30 watts per unit, significantly lower than silicon-based alternatives.

The biological data centre at NUS, powered by living human brain cells, began operations on July 16. Cortical Labs, alongside NUS and DayOne, aims to utilize this technology for applications with limited datasets and unpredictable conditions, such as humanoid robotics and cybersecurity.
Each CL1 unit features over 200,000 lab-grown neurons that exchange electrical signals with computers, translating neural activity into computing power. With plans to house up to 1,000 CL1 units, the facility will also support research on optimal neuron configurations. Compared to traditional data centres, which consumed 7% of Singapore's electricity in 2020, this system offers a much lower energy footprint, addressing the country's stringent energy and water constraints.
