Cosmo Oil and NX Shoji Launch Biofuel Supply Initiative at Tokyo Port
In a significant step towards sustainable shipping practices, Cosmo Oil Marketing, a subsidiary of Cosmo Energy Holdings, has announced its participation in a pioneering biofuel supply initiative at Tokyo Port, led by NX Shoji. This project is part of a broader effort by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government to promote the commercialization of decarbonized fuels, in collaboration with the Tokyo Metropolitan Environmental Public Service Corporation.
Set to commence this autumn, the initiative will provide B24, a blend of heavy fuel oil and fatty acid methyl ester (FAME), to vessels operating in Tokyo Bay. Cosmo Oil will supply the base heavy fuel oil, while NX Shoji will blend it with biofuel for distribution to Cosmo’s shipping clientele and other participating companies. This innovative approach not only facilitates biofuel bunkering in Tokyo Bay but also seeks to significantly lower greenhouse gas emissions associated with maritime activities.
Tokyo authorities regard this initiative as integral to their Zero Emission Tokyo plan, which aims to enhance the utilization of decarbonized fuels across various transportation sectors, including both land and sea. By spearheading this project, Cosmo Oil aims to contribute to the city’s climate objectives and foster the growth of related industries in Japan. The commitment to biofuels in the shipping industry reflects a broader trend towards sustainable practices, positioning Tokyo at the forefront of the transition to greener fuel alternatives.
