Costa del Sol Power Grid Strain Halts 140+ Projects, Sends Chip Factory to Zaragoza
Over 140 investment projects on Costa del Sol are stalled due to structural overload in the power grid, including a €1 billion chip factory relocation. Experts estimate a minimum of five years is needed to expand the high-voltage network sufficiently.

The power grid on Costa del Sol has halted over 140 investment projects, severely impacting residential construction and the business sector in Málaga province. Applications for electricity capacity in Andalusia surged from 964 megawatts in 2020 to 8.2 gigawatts in 2024.
E-Distribución has stopped approving projects over five megawatts, equivalent to about 750 homes, with a lower cap of 1 megawatt on Costa del Sol. Out of three planned transformer stations by Red Eléctrica, only one in Marbella is operational. The Ministry of Ecological Transition has not provided a timeline for a new five-year plan, which faces further delays for approvals.
