COUPLE Project Advances Ammonia Cracking Technology for Hydrogen Production in Germany
The COUPLE project is scaling ammonia cracking technology to enhance hydrogen supply in Europe, specifically for heavy industry and transport. Located in Poppendorf, Germany, the project expands on the EU-funded SINGLE project by increasing hydrogen production from 10 kg to 100 kg per day.
It employs palladium-based membrane reactors and proton ceramic electrochemical reactors, achieving ammonia conversion rates over 99.9% and hydrogen recovery rates above 95%. The initiative targets energy efficiency above 90% and projects hydrogen production costs at €0.75 per kg. The project is expected to operate for over 5,000 hours, advancing its technology readiness level to TRL 7 and demonstrating the commercial viability of ammonia as a hydrogen carrier.
