Covestro Initiates Major Energy Efficiency Project with New Compressor Installation
Covestro is investing in a steam compressor at its Dormagen site, aiming for a 2% reduction in energy consumption annually by 2025. This project, projected to save over 40,000 tons of CO2 emissions per year, is part of a broader strategy for climate-neutral production.
Covestro plans to invest a low double-digit million euro amount in a new steam compressor at its Dormagen facility, targeting a 2% reduction in energy consumption each year compared to 2025. This initiative will save a low three-digit GWh of energy and cut over 40,000 tons of CO2 emissions annually, equivalent to the emissions from a town of 5,000 residents or about 20,000 vehicles.
The compressor will enhance the temperature and pressure of steam produced during TDI manufacturing, which is necessary for various production processes but not sufficiently hot for immediate use. The construction is set to commence by the end of this year, with operations expected to begin in mid-2027. This project follows previous energy efficiency measures, including a reactor installation at the TDI plant, and aligns with Covestro's goal to reduce energy consumption by 20% per ton of product by 2030.
