Cox's Bazar 60 MW Wind Power Plant Advances Bangladesh's Renewable Energy Goals
The 60 MW wind power plant in Cox's Bazar, operational since March 2024, is vital for Bangladesh's energy diversification. The project reflects the government's strategy to reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels and increase renewable energy contribution, targeting 20% by 2030.

The 60 MW wind power plant in Cox's Bazar, established by US-DK Green Energy BD Ltd with a $120 million investment, commenced full-scale generation in March 2024. It has supplied approximately 184 million kWh to the national grid in its first two years, with an average output of about 10 MW.
The plant features 22 turbines, each with a capacity of 3 MW. Bangladesh seeks to generate 20% of its power from renewables by 2030, amidst a current reliance on fossil fuels for over 95% of its energy needs.
Experts have identified strong wind potential in the region, with ongoing feasibility studies for additional projects. However, the plant's capacity factor is 17%, lower than expected, due to weaker wind patterns. Investment recovery is anticipated within 10 years, while upcoming projects are being planned to further enhance the country's renewable energy landscape.
