Crematoria Twente to Conduct Netherlands' First Hydrogen-Powered Cremation by 2026
Crematoria Twente plans to conduct the Netherlands' first hydrogen-powered cremation by retrofitting a cremation oven in Enschede, with trials expected to start by late 2026. Funded by the EU, the project aims to evaluate the safety, emissions, and reliability of using green hydrogen as a carbon-neutral alternative to natural gas, which currently fuels around 120,000 annual cremations in the country. This initiative aligns with broader sustainability goals in the funeral sector and may impact other industries that depend on high-temperature processes.

Crematoria Twente has secured EU funding to retrofit a cremation oven in Enschede for green hydrogen use, aiming to begin trials by late 2026. The project will assess safety, emissions, and reliability, with partners including Facultatieve Technologies and Mateq Processes.
Currently, around 120,000 cremations annually in the Netherlands rely on natural gas, and the initiative seeks to explore hydrogen as a carbon-neutral alternative. The project aligns with broader sustainability goals in the funeral sector and may influence other industries reliant on high-temperature processes.
