Cruachan Power Station: Crucial 'Black Start' Facility Approaches 60 Years of Operation
Cruachan Power Station, a key pumped storage facility, could play a critical role in UK grid reliability during blackouts. Its ability to generate 440MW of power without dependence on wind makes it vital as the grid faces increasing stability challenges.

Cruachan Power Station, located above Loch Awe, is positioned to provide essential backup power during potential UK National Grid failures. The facility can generate up to 440MW of electricity by releasing water from its reservoir, ensuring a 12-hour power supply for critical services like hospitals.
The station, commissioned in 1965, is one of only four pumped storage plants in the UK. Drax Group acquired Cruachan from Scottish Power in 2019 and is advocating for government support to revive expansion plans.
The original proposal to double output was shelved due to high costs. The station remains a significant tourist attraction and cultural reference.
