CSWD to Open New Recycling Processing Center in January 2027 with $38 Million Investment
CSWD is building a new Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) to replace the outdated facility from 1993, expected to open in January 2027. The $38 million project will enhance recycling efficiency and is funded through CSWD reserves, grants, and a $22 million bond from Chittenden County voters. The initial site was unsuitable due to wetland issues, leading to a new location acquisition on a 38-acre parcel near the existing transfer station.

CSWD is constructing a new Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) to replace the outdated facility built in 1993. Set to open in January 2027, the $38 million project will enhance the sorting and preparation of blue-bin recyclables for market, ensuring affordable processing for Vermonters.
Funding comes from CSWD reserves, grants, and a $22 million bond approved by Chittenden County voters. The original site on Redmond Road was deemed too wet during the June 2024 permitting process, prompting CSWD to acquire a new 38-acre parcel nearby, adjacent to the existing transfer station.
