Cuba Advances Renewable Energy Initiatives Under Government Collaboration
Cuba's Ministry of Energy and Mines and universities are advancing renewable energy projects, focusing on biogas and biomass. The integration of these initiatives is essential for addressing the country's energy and food priorities.

Cuba is promoting renewable energy through collaboration between the Ministry of Energy and Mines and various universities. Key initiatives include biogas projects utilizing livestock and industrial waste, with proposals such as the Martí Project for biomethane production and the Managuaco project for domestic biogas use.
Established in 2019, the National Group of Universities for Renewable Energy Sources and Energy Efficiency (GNUFRE) emerged from a 2014 policy aiming to enhance energy efficiency by 2030. President Miguel Díaz-Canel emphasized the need for swift integration of these initiatives, linking energy solutions to food security.
The Sugarcane project aims to create a sustainable sugar industry model that generates electricity and supports food production. Potential risks include the challenge of maintaining momentum and securing stakeholder participation.
