Cumberland Completes Phase 1 of Upgraded Wastewater Treatment Facility
The Village of Cumberland has completed Phase 1 of its upgraded wastewater treatment system, operational since March 23, 2023. The $7 million project, with funding from federal and provincial governments, enhances wastewater filtration and disinfection methods. Future Phase 2 will include tertiary filtration and habitat improvements, addressing environmental impacts and regulatory compliance.

Cumberland's upgraded wastewater treatment facility's Phase 1 is now operational, completing a project that began construction in 2022. The $7 million upgrade includes enhanced water screening, aeration, and UV disinfection to meet regulatory standards, benefiting local water bodies.
Funding was provided by over $3.8 million from the federal government and more than $3.2 million from the provincial government. Phase 2 will introduce additional features such as tertiary filtration and a biochar reed bed. The project aims to improve environmental sustainability and support the shellfish industry in Baynes Sound.
