Cyprus Approves €85M Desalination Plant at Mazotos Amid Drought
Cyprus has approved an €85 million desalination plant in Mazotos to address ongoing drought issues, with operational status expected by December 2026. The facility will initially produce 20,000 cubic metres of drinking water daily, expandable to 40,000 cubic metres, marking a significant step in national water security efforts.

The Environmental Authority of Cyprus granted approval for an €85 million desalination plant at Mazotos, with construction anticipated to start in June 2026 and plant operations commencing in December 2026. This facility, classified as a national priority, will initially provide 20,000 cubic metres of drinking water per day, with the capacity to double.
Various alternative locations were evaluated and rejected due to national security, environmental concerns, and archaeological protections. The Ministry of Defence set conditions concerning proximity to military activities and the pipeline routing to ensure compliance with national security protocols.
The project utilizes advanced reverse osmosis technology and incorporates automated monitoring systems for water quality. The potential environmental impact is mitigated through extensive studies and strict operational guidelines.
