Cyprus Energy Outlook 2026: Electricity Demand, Gas Discoveries, and Interconnection Developments

Cyprus faces a complex energy landscape in 2026, characterized by rising electricity demand and fuel import dependence. The Republic of Cyprus (South) is modernizing its grid, advancing EU-backed interconnection projects, and developing offshore natural gas discoveries, with peak demand expected to reach 1.2-1.3 GW.

Solar energy is growing, potentially reaching a 20-22% share of annual generation, despite curtailments during high output periods. In contrast, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (North) has a peak load of 460 MW with limited renewable capacity and heavy reliance on thermal generation.

Demand is projected to grow by 4-6% without significant renewable expansion. Offshore gas discoveries, including a key find by ExxonMobil and QatarEnergy, are estimated at 226-255 bcm but will not impact the 2026 market. The EuroAsia Interconnector aims to improve grid stability and enable cleaner energy integration, while the North plans to export solar power to Turkey, which could enhance its renewable transition and economic prospects.
