Cyprus Water Security Alert Amid Overflowing Dams
Cyprus remains under a 'yellow alert' for water security despite overflowing dams. The Water Development Department is proposing strict water usage restrictions in light of rising consumption rates and inadequate reservoir levels.

As of April 29, 2026, total water reserves in Cyprus were at 113.7 million cubic meters, equating to 39.1% capacity, despite the overall improvement from 23.2% last year. Local dams are at 98% capacity while the Southern Conveyor Project is only at 34.9%.
Consumption has surged, particularly in Paphos with a 15.8% increase, leading to concerns about a potential risk of total depletion of reserves by 2027. The Water Development Department's strategy for 2026-2028 prioritizes domestic use and calls for reliance on desalination plants, with risks linked to project timelines and agricultural over-consumption complicating water security.
