Danish Research Reveals Effects of Offshore Wind Turbines on Fog Formation
Danish scientists established that offshore wind turbines can both create and disperse shallow fog, depending on atmospheric conditions. This research is crucial for understanding the local microclimates around expanding offshore wind farms, which impacts navigation safety for vessels in affected areas.

Danish research indicates offshore wind turbines influence shallow fog formation and dispersal. Under specific winter conditions, turbines can mix air layers, leading to fog creation by moving warm, moist air upward and cooler air downward.
Conversely, they can also disperse fog by introducing warmer, drier air. Shipping authorities are monitoring these effects due to the expansion of offshore wind farms and their implications for vessel navigation. The Dutch North Sea is projected to have approximately 1,700 turbines by 2032, raising concerns over navigational challenges and the need for improved forecasting systems to ensure safe maritime operations.
