DARPA Transitions Space-BACN Satellite Laser Link Program to DIU
DARPA is concluding its Space-BACN project, transitioning it to the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) for further development. This shift aims to enhance satellite communication capabilities essential for the Space Force's Space Data Network.

The Space-BACN program, initially under DARPA, is being transferred to the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) to facilitate on-orbit demonstration of laser link technology. The program's goal is to create universal satellite laser links that enable communication across various satellite constellations, critical for the Space Force's Space Data Network.
DARPA's latest budget indicates $5.7 million allocated in 2025, while the total budget from FY23 to FY24 is slightly over $60 million. Contractors involved, including Mbryonics and Mynaric, have completed development of optical inter-satellite link terminals and are set for performance tests. This transition potentially enhances the military's ability to integrate commercial and government satellite networks, but challenges remain regarding interoperability and scalability of communication ranges.
