Dasu Hydropower Project Completion Delayed by Low Budget Allocation
A National Assembly panel reported that the Dasu hydropower project will take 64 years to complete under current budget allocations, while the Diamer-Bhasha Dam will take 46 years. The committee highlighted that the allocation of Rs20 billion for Dasu is insufficient against its total cost of Rs1,424 billion. A proposal to prioritize critical mega projects in the next fiscal budget was supported, alongside recommendations for transparent recruitment practices and updates on key projects like the Pat Feeder Canal in Baluchistan.

The National Assembly Standing Committee on Water Resources revealed that the Dasu hydropower project will require 64 years to complete due to inadequate annual budget allocations, while the Diamer-Bhasha Dam is projected to take 46 years. Current fiscal year allocations total Rs133 billion for 42 water sector projects, against a construction cost of Rs3,958 billion.
The committee proposed prioritizing critical mega projects in the upcoming budget. New projects worth Rs976 billion were proposed. Transparency in recruitment under the Kachhi Canal Project and updates on the Pat Feeder Canal Project were also recommended to ensure accountability and address water resource challenges.
