Data Centers Contribute to Heat and Water Crisis Amidst Rising Temperatures in France
Eighteen French departments are under yellow alert due to a heat wave, the first such occurrence in May since 2004. Data centers exacerbate this issue by increasing local temperatures and consuming vast amounts of water, raising concerns over sustainability and public health.

As of May 25, 2026, eighteen departments in France are on yellow alert due to unprecedented heat levels in May. A study from Arizona State University reveals that data centers near Phoenix create local temperature increases of up to 2.2 degrees Celsius, with significant heat impact detectable up to 500 meters away.
Data centers produce heat equivalent to that of 40,000 households, with thermal output exceeding peak sunlight by two to six times. Additionally, a one-megawatt data center consumes approximately 25.5 million liters of water annually, contributing to a global data center water consumption of 560 billion liters in 2023.
The rapid growth in demand for AI could triple the need for data centers by 2030, intensifying resource competition with human populations and agriculture. Implementing green spaces and heat recovery systems is recommended to mitigate these effects.
