Dataone Proposes Two Datacenters in Isère, Near Grenoble, Amid Resident Concerns
Dataone is developing two datacenters in Isère, including one in Eybens near Grenoble. During a public meeting on January 8, residents expressed concerns about the project's energy consumption, environmental impact, and transparency.
The datacenter, expected to reach 200 megawatts (MW) in three years, will support artificial intelligence (AI) operations and is currently operating at 15 MW. Dataone plans to create about 100 jobs across its sites in Eybens and Villefontaine.
Local officials are cautious about the project, which is funded by private investors with state support. The mayor of Eybens has requested additional studies on the project's environmental effects. The meeting highlighted the community's worries about heat islands and limited job creation.
Dataone's CEO described the datacenter as eco-responsible and crucial for France's digital sovereignty, promising decarbonized energy use. France currently ranks fifth globally in datacenter presence.
