Davie Defense Secures $3.5 Billion Contract for Arctic Security Cutters
Davie Defense Inc. has finalized a contract worth $3.5 billion with the U.S. Coast Guard for five Arctic Security Cutters, expanding the fleet to 11. This initiative aims to enhance U.S. maritime capabilities amid increasing geopolitical tensions in the Arctic region.
Davie Defense Inc. has secured a $3.5 billion contract with the U.S. Coast Guard to build five Arctic Security Cutters, part of an expanded fleet totaling 11 vessels in response to executive orders aimed at increasing icebreaker capabilities.
Three cutters will be constructed in Texas, while two will be built in Finland, raising concerns about U.S. maritime industry revitalization efforts as per the SHIPS for America Act, debated during an April 28 House hearing. The contract aligns with the 2024 ICE Pact, a trilateral agreement with Canada and Finland, to leverage Finnish shipbuilding expertise while eventually transitioning more work to the U.S.
Delivery of the first cutter is anticipated by 2028, with the contract extending to February 2035. The Coast Guard currently operates limited icebreaker assets and faces challenges from increased Russian and Chinese naval activities, making this contract critical for national security and Arctic presence.
