Dayton City Plan Board Moves to Prohibit Large Data Centers
Dayton's City Plan Board has recommended a ban on large data centers, with a 180-day moratorium to be considered by city commissioners. The zoning amendment aims to address the negative impacts of large data facilities on surrounding properties, aligning city codes with best practices.

The Dayton City Plan Board has approved a recommendation to prohibit large data centers within the city. A proposed 180-day moratorium, set for consideration on April 22, 2026, aims to halt new applications while the city revises its zoning code to include data centers as a prohibited use.
Current regulations already restrict certain business activities due to their potential negative effects, and this extension will cover data centers, which can include operations like cryptocurrency mining and server farms. Existing data centers in Dayton will be grandfathered in. This decision reflects concerns over resource consumption and local impacts, as large facilities can significantly affect surrounding neighborhoods.
