De Soto Engages in Nuclear Power Site Discussions in Kansas
De Soto city leaders are pursuing involvement in a potential nuclear power project with TerraPower and Evergy. This initiative aligns with Kansas's long-term energy goals and reflects a broader national push to expand nuclear capacity as a response to increasing energy demands, particularly from data centers.

De Soto has expressed interest in a potential nuclear power plant as TerraPower, in collaboration with Evergy and the Kansas Department of Commerce, seeks sites in Kansas. The three parties signed a memorandum of understanding in September 2025, which facilitates discussions but does not guarantee project implementation.
The U.S. aims to increase nuclear energy capacity from 100 gigawatts to 400 gigawatts by 2050. The selection process for the site will consider community support, site characteristics, and licensing from the U.S.
Nuclear Regulatory Commission. TerraPower's Natrium technology, featuring a sodium-cooled reactor, is designed to enhance output and integrate renewable energy. Despite some skepticism from environmental organizations, the existing Wolf Creek Generating Station employs robust safety measures and continuous monitoring to mitigate risks. The region's interest in nuclear energy could coincide with upcoming data center projects that require stable, low-carbon electricity.
