Debate Surrounds Future of Indian River Power Plant Amid Energy Demand Concerns
Delaware lawmakers and energy experts are considering the potential reactivation of NRG Energy's Indian River Power Plant as energy demand rises amidst aging infrastructure. The plant, which ceased coal operations in February 2025, may play a role in mitigating energy supply challenges, particularly with increasing reliance on hyper-scale data centers.

The Indian River Power Plant, which was Delaware's last coal-fired generator, ceased operations in February 2025. As energy demand is projected to rise, especially from large-scale data centers, discussions are ongoing among Delaware lawmakers about the plant's possible revival.
While NRG Energy has confirmed there are no plans to restart coal operations, some officials are exploring the conversion of the site for natural gas or small modular nuclear reactors. The nearest natural gas line is over two miles away, making any transition costly.
Additionally, the site is prone to flooding, raising environmental concerns about potential coal ash contamination. Overall, the plant's future remains uncertain amid challenges in infrastructure and environmental risks.
