Decentralized Ammonia Production Promises Sustainable Fertilizer Solutions
A recent study indicates that small-scale ammonia production could enhance supply security and reduce environmental impact in Hungary and beyond. This technology, when paired with renewable energy, may offer a competitive alternative to traditional methods in fertilizer production.

A study by an international research team highlights that decentralized ammonia production could increase food supply security and lower greenhouse gas emissions. Researchers from Germany, Switzerland, and the USA analyzed nearly 13,000 scenarios to identify economically viable methods for ammonia production with reduced carbon outputs.
Currently, ammonia production is concentrated in large chemical plants, which contributes to long supply chains. The Haber-Bosch process, responsible for 1-2% of global greenhouse gas emissions, could be transformed by using hydrogen produced through electrolysis powered by renewable energy sources. This shift may position ammonia as a key application for green hydrogen, crucial for sustainable agriculture.
