DeKalb County to Revisit Proposed Regulations for Data Centers Amid Resource Concerns
The DeKalb County Commission will consider a modified resolution regarding regulations for future data centers, originally introduced last month. The Health, Education, and Public Welfare committee voted 5 to 2 to present the revised resolution, which includes recommendations from committee member Mathias Anderson.
The initiative was prompted by interest in establishing a nuclear-powered data center in the county. Concerns have been raised about the potential for noise pollution and the substantial electricity demands of data centers, which can use enough power to supply 10,000 homes.
The resolution aims to impose a 5,000-foot restriction from residential and agricultural areas. However, member Tom Chandler criticized the resolution as overly restrictive, arguing it could effectively ban data centers altogether. The county commission is scheduled to meet on January 26 to discuss the resolution.
