Demolition of Liddell Power Station Stacks Set for Late April, New Industries Planned
The demolition of the Liddell power station's two stacks is scheduled for late April, following planning approval. The project supports the site's transformation into a clean energy hub with an estimated $1 billion portfolio of industries, including solar panel recycling and data centers. AGL has budgeted $225 million for decommissioning, with recycling efforts expected to offset costs. The site may employ hundreds and drive economic growth in the Upper Hunter region.

The Liddell power station's two 168-meter stacks will be demolished in late April, approved by the Department of Planning in 2023. This marks a significant step in transforming the site into a clean energy hub, estimated to involve a $1 billion industry portfolio, including renewable energy and recycling initiatives.
AGL is investing $225 million in decommissioning, with recycling efforts yielding 2,646 tonnes of waste materials. Plans for a solar panel recycling facility and data centers are underway, potentially employing hundreds and contributing to local economic growth. The region’s grid power demand is projected to rise by 28% in the next decade, driven by data centers.
