Denbighshire Recycling Centre Enhances Energy Efficiency with New Battery Storage System
Denbighshire County Council has installed a battery energy storage system (BESS) at its recycling centre, funded by 90% from the Welsh Government. This system improves energy efficiency by storing excess solar energy for later use, supporting the council's sustainability goals.

A new battery energy storage system (BESS) has been integrated at a Denbigh recycling centre, enhancing energy efficiency by storing excess solar energy for use during non-generating periods. The Welsh Government funded 90% of the project through the EVCI & ZEV Grant 25-26.
The site has electrified 15% of its waste and recycling fleet, contributing to approximately 74,335 kWh of emission-free travel, equating to 75,000 miles. Annual savings from the BESS are anticipated to reach 76,731 kWh and a reduction of 22 tonnes of carbon emissions, resulting in an estimated cost saving of £16,113. This initiative aligns with the council’s commitment to sustainability following its Climate and Nature Emergency declaration in 2019.
