Denmark Faces Electrical Grid Crisis Amidst Growing Demand for EV Charging
Denmark's electrical grid is overwhelmed with requests for 57 GW of new capacity against a peak demand of 7 GW. The crisis stems from significant delays in infrastructure development and a transition to prioritized connection categories, which could reshape future energy utilization.

Denmark's transmission operator, Energinet, has frozen new connection agreements as demand reaches 57 GW while maximum consumption is only 7 GW. This reflects a critical imbalance as 11 GW of this demand is already reserved, primarily from data centers and large battery projects, which account for 80% of requests.
Political reforms initiated in July 2026 will shift to a prioritized connection system to address the crisis, categorizing applicants and imposing stricter criteria. The urgency is highlighted by the fact that 70% of Energinet's development projects are delayed, averaging 80% behind schedule. Similar pressures are emerging in the Czech Republic, indicating potential parallels in energy management challenges.
