Derby Council Approves £100,000 Repairs for Longbridge Weir Hydro Power House

HYDRO POWER

The Longbridge Weir Hydro Power House in Derby, built 14 years ago, requires £100,000 in repairs due to risks of structural failure. This hydroelectric plant generates energy for the Council House and surrounding buildings, saving the council money on electricity bills and earning additional income from a government grant.

A council report indicates that silt buildup from a major flood has reduced energy generation, necessitating repairs by Derwent Hydroelectric Power Ltd, the original contractor. In 2024/25, the plant generated 429,829 KWh, representing 29% of the Council House's energy needs.

Meanwhile, the City of Brandon is considering a pilot organic waste composting program for multi-unit homes, costing $50,000, to reduce landfill waste and promote composting. The program aims to serve 120 homes, utilizing electric food recyclers and could lead to significant reductions in landfill waste over time.
