Des Moines County Board Approves Wind, Solar, and Battery Storage Ordinance
The Des Moines County Board of Supervisors approved the second reading of an ordinance regulating the siting, operation, and decommissioning of commercial wind energy systems, solar panel installations, and battery storage facilities. The board waived a third reading during a meeting attended by the public.
An attorney raised concerns about a modification in the ordinance that excluded participating property owners from discussions. The Assistant Land Use Administrator identified an error in the ordinance regarding property restoration.
Chairman Shane McCampbell voted against the ordinance due to setback distances and turbine height, which are set at 1,800 feet or three times the turbine height, and 650 feet, respectively. Community members expressed concerns about the permitting process and protections for non-participating properties.
