Development and Features of the F4U Corsair Fighter Aircraft
The F4U Corsair, developed by Vought and produced starting in 1941, featured a powerful radial engine and a distinctive inverted gull wing design. Its performance and ruggedness contributed to its success in WWII and beyond.

The U.S. Navy issued a design competition in February 1938 for a new shipboard fighter powered by a radial engine. Vought's response included two designs, the V-166A and V-166B, with the latter evolving into the XF4U-1, which first flew on May 29, 1940.
Powered by the R-2800-4 engine, it became the first American fighter to exceed 400 mph on October 1, 1940. Vought was awarded a contract on June 30, 1941, to produce 584 F4U-1 Corsairs, which featured a unique wing design for improved strength and visibility. These aircraft were crucial in the Pacific Theater during WWII and continued to serve in later conflicts, highlighting their enduring legacy and effectiveness.
