Development of Fusion Blanket Test Facility in Collaboration with DOE
General Atomics is collaborating with the U.S. Department of Energy to develop the Fusion Blanket Component Test Facility (BCTF) in San Diego. This facility will enable testing of full-scale fusion power-plant blankets, addressing critical engineering challenges for commercial fusion power plants.

General Atomics and the U.S. Department of Energy are partnering to create the Fusion Blanket Component Test Facility (BCTF), aimed at evaluating integrated fusion blanket systems. The facility will utilize lithium-based materials to capture energy and produce tritium necessary for fusion reactions.
The initiative follows a seed investment from the DOE, which has laid the groundwork for collaboration with Idaho National Laboratory, Kyoto Fusioneering, and the University of California San Diego. Leveraging existing infrastructure from GA's Magnet Technologies Center could expedite the project timeline if full construction is approved. Successful testing at BCTF is essential to overcoming key challenges in the development of commercial fusion power.
