Devro Scotland Ltd has been fined £48,000 after admitting to discharging 1.8 million litres of contaminated wastewater into the Bothlin Burn in July 2021. The Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) reported ammonia levels up to 350 times the environmental quality standard. This is the company's second conviction for polluting the burn.

Devro Scotland Ltd has been fined £48,000 for discharging 1.8 million litres of contaminated wastewater into Bothlin Burn in July 2021. The discharge occurred due to a fat blockage in the waste drainage system, causing the effluent to back up and overflow into the surface water pipe connecting to the burn.
SEPA found ammonia levels in the wastewater were up to 350 times higher than the environmental quality standard, severely impacting aquatic life. This incident led to public complaints regarding the burn's appearance and smell. The court imposed the fine after the company pleaded guilty to breaching water environment legislation, marking its second conviction for similar offenses.
