USDA Addresses Rising Input Costs Amid Fertilizer Supply Challenges
USDA Deputy Secretary Stephen Vaden outlined ongoing challenges in fertilizer transportation and rising input costs for farmers. The department is implementing measures to enhance domestic production and address market fairness, aiming to stabilize prices in the agricultural sector.

The USDA is responding to rising fertilizer costs and supply chain disruptions linked to the Strait of Hormuz. Deputy Secretary Stephen Vaden noted that recent conflicts have hindered fertilizer transportation, affecting global supply chains that provide nearly 49% of urea and 30% of ammonia exports.
The USDA's $500 million FIELDS Program, launched on July 1, aims to bolster domestic fertilizer production and improve supply chain resilience. Efforts also include a collaboration with the Federal Trade Commission on an antitrust investigation into input markets.
Vaden encourages farmers to report illegal practices affecting costs. The situation requires time for inventory adjustments, and immediate relief is unlikely.
