Innovative Catalyst for Ammonia Production Using Sunlight and Gold Developed at TU Wien
Researchers at TU Wien and Soochow University have created an efficient catalyst combining MXene and gold for ammonia production, utilizing sunlight and low voltage. This advancement significantly reduces energy requirements and enhances the viability of ammonia synthesis from nitrate in wastewater, a critical process for nitrogen fertilizer production.

A novel catalyst developed by TU Wien and Soochow University enables the conversion of nitrate into ammonia using sunlight and approximately 1.5 volts. This catalyst, made of MXene and gold nanoparticles, enhances energy efficiency by utilizing both light and generated heat in the chemical reaction, with thermal energy contributing 57% to the reactivity.
The catalyst achieves an ammonia production rate of 2.1 mol per gram per hour, indicating substantial potential for industrial application. The dual effect of sunlight and heat not only increases efficiency but also optimizes the electron transport process, making ammonia production less energy-intensive. This innovation could lead to more sustainable fertilizer production methods.
