Digital Realty Plans New Data Center in Bouc-Bel-Air Amidst Local Opposition

DATA AND AI INFRASTRUCTURE

The public inquiry in October 2025 regarding Digital Realty's data center project in Bouc-Bel-Air, located in a former Décathlon warehouse, faced significant opposition. Local associations and environmental groups, including France Nature Environnement, called for a moratorium on energy-intensive projects due to concerns over the environmental impact.

The Bouc-Bel-Air municipal council ultimately voted in favor of the project despite these concerns. Digital Realty aims to build the MRS6 facility, which will host 24,000 servers to meet the surging demand for data storage driven by artificial intelligence. The facility's energy consumption is projected to be equivalent to that of a city with 117,000 inhabitants, significantly exceeding the needs of Bouc-Bel-Air, raising alarms among environmental advocates.
