Discovery of Lake Neuron, World's Largest Underground Thermal Lake, Beneath Albania
Lake Neuron, the largest underground thermal lake, is situated 127 meters below the Vromoner region in southern Albania. Verified by the Europe Records Institute in 2025, it measures 138.3 meters in length and has a volume of approximately 8,335 cubic meters.
Discovered by the Czech Speleological Society, the expedition employed GeoSlam 3D scanning technology. The lake's thermal water contains hydrogen sulfide, contributing to sulfuric acid speleogenesis. A 2024 biodiversity survey documented various microbial and invertebrate communities, including endemic species.
The Neuron Foundation funded the expedition, which collected measurements from 2023 to 2025. The cave system is located near the Albania-Greece border and is not currently designated as a protected area.
