DLA Distribution Activates First Microgrid at NAS Sigonella to Enhance Energy Resilience
DLA Distribution Sigonella in Italy has activated a new solar array and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), creating a self-sustaining microgrid. This system is the first of its kind in both DLA and Navy Region Europe, Africa, Central, and aims to maintain uninterrupted logistics operations during power outages.
The project builds on prior renewable energy initiatives that saved over $100,000 annually and recouped investments by 2022. The BESS can supply 400 kilowatt-hours each and allows NAS Sigonella to operate independently during utility outages for up to 14 days.
Collaborating with NAVFAC Sigonella, the project supports energy resilience goals and reduces reliance on generators, benefiting both DLA missions and overall installation operations. This initiative aligns with Department of War objectives for energy independence and sustainability at the strategic logistics hub.
