DoD Urged to Achieve Clean Audit by 2028 Amid Financial Oversight Concerns
The Department of Defense faces pressure to complete a clean financial audit by December 31, 2028, as mandated by Congress. Lawmakers are skeptical of the DoD's ability to meet this requirement given its historical struggles with financial transparency.

The Department of Defense (DoD) must produce a clean financial audit by December 31, 2028, as mandated in the 2024 National Defense Authorization Act. This requirement comes amid skepticism from House lawmakers regarding the DoD's capacity to fulfill it, especially since the agency has never achieved a clean audit despite managing nearly half of the government's discretionary spending.
The Marine Corps remains the only service to pass an audit since 2018. Internal accounting issues have plagued the DoD for over 30 years, leading to its designation as a high-risk area. Concerns about increased risks of fraud correlate with the proposed budget increase from approximately $901 billion in 2026 to $1.5 trillion in 2027. Additionally, the Department of the Air Force updated its guidance on religious accommodations, streamlining processes and ensuring oversight for facial hair requests.
