Dongfang Electric Achieves Breakthrough in Direct Seawater Electrolysis for Hydrogen Production
Dongfang Electric Corporation, in collaboration with Academician Xie Heping's team, has successfully verified a novel split-structure direct electrolysis system for hydrogen production, capable of generating 110 Nm³/h of hydrogen from seawater without desalination. This follows the earlier development of a 10 Nm³/h prototype, marking a significant advancement in marine green hydrogen production and enhancing scalability for future applications. The innovation positions Dongfang Electric to play a crucial role in the global energy transition.

A joint R&D team from Dongfang Electric Corporation and Academician Xie Heping's team has successfully completed over 1000 hours of continuous operation verification for a novel split-structure direct electrolysis hydrogen production system, capable of producing 110 Nm³/h of hydrogen without desalination. This milestone follows the development of a 10 Nm³/h prototype that passed 240 hours of testing in July 2024, and the completion of the 110 Nm³/h system in September 2024, which achieved its initial 240 hours of stable operation.
The system features a modular design for improved scalability and adaptability. This innovation aims to enhance the production of marine green hydrogen by bypassing traditional desalination processes, positioning Dongfang Electric to contribute significantly to the global energy transition.
