Drax Installs Solar Panels at Historic Scottish Hydro Power Stations
Drax has completed the installation of the first solar panels at the Glenlee hydro power station in Scotland, part of a project involving 1,500 panels across multiple sites. This initiative aims to reduce dependence on the local electricity grid for backup power and supports Drax's goal of achieving net zero by 2040.

Drax has finished installing initial solar panels at Glenlee, a historic hydro power station in Dumfries and Galloway, as part of a broader initiative involving 1,500 panels across the Galloway and Lanark hydro sites. The project, costing approximately £850,000, aims to facilitate backup power needs for the hydro scheme, which powers over 400,000 homes.
Drax acquired the hydro system in December 2018, which includes two power stations in Lanark and six in Galloway. This integration of solar technology with existing hydro systems is expected to enhance the sustainability of the operations and contribute to Drax’s net zero target by 2040.
