The redevelopment of the former DB wagon factory site in Duisburg's Wedau-Nord area has made significant progress, receiving three stars in the funding procedure, which allows for site remediation funding from North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW). The site owner, Nerra GmbH, estimates the remediation and infrastructure costs at over 50 million euros.
Nerra plans to apply for 48 million euros in funding to implement the new development, which includes demolishing existing structures and reworking access roads. NRW will provide funding through a program for former coal power plant sites.
Additionally, the University of Duisburg-Essen's supercomputer, AmplitUDE, is housed in a newly constructed data center, contributing to nearby heating needs. Plans for a hydrogen innovation and testing center are underway, with federal and state funding potentially totaling 120 million euros for the project, which will include a technology center with 20,000 square meters of rental space.
