Durban North's Beachwood Coastal Estate Faces Community Opposition Amid Environmental Concerns
The R3.5 billion Beachwood Coastal Estate in Durban North advances despite significant resident opposition and ecological warnings. The development's impact on local wetlands and infrastructure raises concerns about long-term environmental sustainability.

The Beachwood Coastal Estate, valued at R3.5 billion, is proceeding with development on 42 hectares of land in Durban North, approved in July 2023. While Beachwood Investments claims only 23% of the area will be built on, local residents argue that the project threatens the Beachwood Mangroves, a national monument, and exacerbates existing infrastructure issues, particularly with the Northern Wastewater Treatment Works.
The coalition opposing the project, including residents' associations and NGOs, plans to take legal action, although they acknowledge that the land is privately owned. The development is expected to create 1,500 jobs, but concerns about ecological degradation remain significant, with the possibility of flood risks increasing in the area. The outcome of the legal battle may occur after construction has begun.
