Dutch Government Partners with Stackit for Cloud Services
The Dutch government has signed a framework contract with Stackit to diversify cloud service providers beyond U.S. firms. This initiative aims to enhance digital sovereignty and security for governmental data management.

The Dutch government has established a framework agreement with Stackit for cloud services, aiming to reduce reliance on U.S. providers like Microsoft Azure and Amazon AWS. This contract does not mandate usage or set fixed spending limits; expenditures will vary based on actual service uptake.
Key contract provisions include data storage within the European Economic Area, audit rights for compliance verification, and termination clauses related to any transfer of control outside the EEA. Stackit, part of the Lidl/Schwarz Digits group, is investing €11 billion in a data center in Lübbenau, expected to be operational by the end of 2027.
This move addresses growing concerns over digital sovereignty and aims to bolster the European market amidst potential risks associated with 'sovereign clouds' from U.S. companies due to legal frameworks like the U.S. Cloud Act.
