Earthjustice Petitions Louisiana to Investigate Financing of Meta's $27 Billion Data Center Project

DATA AND AI INFRASTRUCTURE

Earthjustice has filed a petition with Louisiana regulators for an investigation into the financing of Meta's planned $27 billion data center in Richland Parish. This project entails the construction of three gas-fired power plants and new transmission lines, which Earthjustice claims could lead to significant costs being shifted to local consumers if Meta exits early.

Initially, Meta agreed to backstop the financing, but a deal with Blue Owl Capital restructured the project, transferring ownership to Beignet Investors while Meta would become a tenant. This allows Meta to terminate its lease after four years instead of the original 15, raising concerns about its infrastructure cost contributions.

Earthjustice warns that an early exit could burden local households and businesses with unpaid energy investments. The investigation request is described as unprecedented and highlights tensions regarding the economic and environmental impacts of energy-intensive data centers. The project has a capacity exceeding 2 gigawatts.
