Easton Explores Data Center Development Amid Growing Lehigh Valley Interest
Easton is considering data center development as part of the Lehigh Valley's growing interest in this sector. The city planning commission discussed the topic, noting that current ordinances lack specific requirements for data processing industries.
While Easton has limited space, areas near major highways could be developed. Local municipalities have the authority to regulate data centers through zoning laws. Other nearby communities, including Upper Macungie and South Whitehall, are drafting ordinances for regulation.
Concerns were raised about insufficient protections in Easton’s current framework, particularly regarding environmental impacts. Easton recently rejected a 1-million-square-foot warehouse project, and officials aim to develop comprehensive regulations for data centers. Meanwhile, TierPoint acquired an industrial park in Upper Macungie and proposals for new data centers are in progress, with Amazon committing $20 billion for projects in Pennsylvania.
