Eawag Designated National Reference Centre for Wastewater Monitoring in Switzerland
The Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology (Eawag) has been appointed the National Reference Centre for Wastewater Monitoring by the Federal Office of Public Health. The initiative aims to enhance monitoring of health data, particularly pathogens and substances related to drug use, through centralized analysis from ten Swiss wastewater treatment plants, covering nearly two million people. The collaboration, set for ten years, aims to improve public health preparedness for future pandemics and provide insights into substance consumption trends.

Eawag is now the National Reference Centre for Wastewater Monitoring, commissioned by the Federal Office of Public Health to analyze health data from municipal wastewater. This includes detecting pathogens and substances linked to drug use, with operations centralized at Eawag's facilities in Dübendorf.
The program involves ten wastewater treatment plants across Switzerland, covering around two million residents.
