EcoPro HN Develops First MW-Class Ammonia Engine Exhaust Gas Treatment System in Korea
EcoPro HN has developed Korea's first MW-class ammonia engine exhaust gas purification system, in collaboration with HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering and the Korean Register of Shipping. This development is part of a national project aimed at improving greenhouse gas management for ship emissions. The new system utilizes microwave technology for efficient catalyst heating, minimizing fuel consumption and eliminating the need for fossil fuel-based auxiliary equipment. The technology aims to facilitate the use of ammonia as a carbon-free marine fuel.

EcoPro HN has successfully developed Korea's first MW-class ammonia engine exhaust gas purification system in partnership with HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering and the Korean Register of Shipping. This initiative is part of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries' national project focused on greenhouse gas management for ship emissions.
The newly developed system employs microwave technology to selectively heat the catalyst, improving energy efficiency and simplifying facilities. Ammonia, a promising carbon-free marine fuel, is projected by the IEA to account for 44% of marine fuel by 2050.
The system is expected to accelerate the commercialization of ammonia-fueled ships amid stricter environmental regulations. EcoPro HN plans further technology refinement and real-world testing with its partners to advance exhaust gas treatment solutions for next-generation marine engines.
